Blackened shrimp are shrimp coated with a spice mix and cooked at high heat. This method gives the shrimp a dark, charred crust. I love how the spices create a bold flavor that many find irresistible. The blackening technique comes from Cajun cuisine, which is rich in spices and flavor.

Ingredients

1 pound large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 teaspoons paprika

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions

In a small bowl, mix together the paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, black pepper, and salt to create a blackening spice blend.

In a large bowl, toss the shrimp with olive oil and the blackening spice blend until they are evenly coated.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. You can use cast iron for a better sear.

Once the skillet is hot, add the seasoned shrimp in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes on one side until the shrimp turn opaque and develop a charred, blackened crust.

Flip the shrimp and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fully cooked through. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan; you may need to do this in batches.

Once cooked, remove the skillet from heat and drizzle with fresh lemon juice.

Transfer the blackened shrimp to a serving plate and garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side.
