Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 egg (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

Incorporate Butter: Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese and Herbs: Gently fold in the shredded cheddar cheese, grated Parmesan, chopped chives, and parsley until evenly distributed.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk with an egg (if using) until combined.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon just until the dough comes together. Avoid overmixing.

Shape the Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Using a round biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather the scraps, knead gently, and cut out more biscuits.

Optional Egg Wash: If desired, beat the reserved egg and brush it gently over the tops of the biscuits for a golden finish.

Bake: Place the biscuit tray in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are puffed and golden brown on top.

Serve Warm: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes on a wire rack. Serve warm with butter or your favorite spread.
