Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)

2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, making sure to cover the sides well for easy removal later.

Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire surface.

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring continuously until the mixture comes to a boil. Let it boil for 3-4 minutes without stirring, until it thickens slightly.

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using. Pour the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure to cover them thoroughly.

Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, until the mixture is bubbling and caramel-like. Keep a close eye to avoid burning.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot caramelized crackers. Allow them to melt for about 2-3 minutes, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the top.

If desired, sprinkle with chopped nuts and add a light dusting of sea salt for extra flavor.

Chill the Christmas Crack in the refrigerator for about 1 hour, or until the chocolate hardens completely.

Once set, break the crack into pieces and enjoy! You can store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
