Puff pastry is a light, flaky pastry made from layers of dough and butter. The magic of puff pastry lies in its unique preparation method, which involves folding butter into the dough multiple times to create thin layers. When baked, the water in the butter turns to steam, causing the layers to puff up and create a delicate, airy texture. This pastry is commonly used in both sweet and savory dishes, from classic French pastries to gourmet appetizers.

Ingredients

1 package of puff pastry sheets (2 sheets, thawed)

8 oz sliced ham (preferably smoked or deli-style)

8 oz cheese (Swiss, Gruyère, or your favorite meltable cheese, sliced)

1 egg (beaten for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried thyme (or herbs of your choice)

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Sea salt, to taste

Optional: Fresh chives or parsley for garnish

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out one sheet of puff pastry to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut the pastry into equal squares (about 3x3 inches) and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Make sure there’s enough space between each square.

Layer Ingredients: On half of the puff pastry squares, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard. Layer slices of ham on top, followed by a slice of cheese. Sprinkle with garlic powder, thyme, and a dash of black pepper and sea salt.

Stack and Seal: Place another puff pastry square on top of each of the layered squares, gently pressing down to seal the edges. Use a fork to crimp the edges and ensure they’re properly sealed.

Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each puff pastry stack with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful, golden color when baked.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.

Serve: Once baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Optionally, you can sprinkle with chopped fresh chives or parsley for a pop of color. Serve warm as an appetizer or a delightful snack!
