Ingredients

9-12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

24 oz marinara sauce (canned or homemade)

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the lasagna noodles in a large pot of salted boiling water according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or sausage, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the meat is browned and the onions are soft. Drain excess fat.

Stir in the marinara sauce and simmer for about 5 minutes. Season with oregano, basil, salt, and pepper to taste.

In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt. Mix until well combined.

In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place a layer of noodles over the sauce, then spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce, and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.

Repeat the layers once more: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Top with a final layer of noodles, remaining meat sauce, and the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray foil with cooking spray) and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Let the lasagna cool for about 10-15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired and serve warm.
