When it comes to cooking with mushrooms, two of the most popular varieties are cremini (also known as baby bella) and button mushrooms. Cremini mushrooms are slightly more mature than button mushrooms, boasting a deeper flavor and firmer texture. They are often praised for their ability to absorb surrounding flavors, making them ideal for a variety of dishes. Button mushrooms, on the other hand, are mild in flavor and have a delicate texture that works well in both cooked and raw applications.

Ingredients

1 pound of fresh mushrooms (cremini or button)

4 tablespoons of unsalted butter

4 cloves of garlic, minced

1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)

½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional for heat)

½ cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Salt and black pepper to taste

2 tablespoons of fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Juice of half a lemon

Instructions

Clean the Mushrooms: Gently wipe the mushrooms with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. If they are large, you can cut them in half; smaller ones can be left whole.

Melt the Butter: In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.

Sauté the Garlic: Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute or until fragrant, being careful not to let it brown.

Cook the Mushrooms: Add the mushrooms to the skillet, and season with salt, black pepper, fresh thyme, and red pepper flakes (if using). Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are tender and golden brown.

Add Parmesan: Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the mushrooms. Stir well to combine, allowing the cheese to melt and coat the mushrooms evenly. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Finish with Lemon Juice: Remove the skillet from heat. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the mushrooms, and stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving. Enjoy your garlic Parmesan mushrooms warm as a delightful appetizer or side dish!
