The concept of swim biscuits may be new to some, but they have their roots in Southern cooking, where biscuits are a staple. The term "swim" refers to the method of baking these biscuits in a bath of melted butter. This technique, while unconventional, is what sets them apart from traditional biscuits. In classic biscuit recipes, the dough is usually rolled out, cut into shapes, and baked on a dry surface. However, butter swim biscuits are designed to be baked directly in a dish filled with melted butter, allowing the biscuits to absorb some of that richness while baking.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup diced cooked ham

1 cup whole milk

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder. Whisk until well combined.

Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese and diced ham until evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.

In another bowl, pour the whole milk and melted butter together. Stir gently until combined.

Pour the milk and butter mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir just until the dough comes together; it will be lumpy and thick. Do not overmix.

Pour the dough into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. The dough will be quite thick and may not spread out completely.

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the biscuits cool for a few minutes in the baking dish before cutting them into squares.

                  Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 9-12

                    - Presentation Tips: Serve the biscuits warm, placed on a rustic wooden board. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color. Consider pairing them with a side of honey mustard or a creamy dip for added flavor!
