Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

1 lb ground beef (80/20 for better flavor)

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup onion, finely chopped

1 large egg

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

2 cups onions, sliced (about 2 large onions)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth (low sodium)

1 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp dried thyme

1/2 tsp black pepper

Salt, to taste

1 tbsp butter (optional, for added richness)

Instructions

Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:

    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.

      - Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

        Cook the Steaks:

          - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

            Make the Onion Gravy:

              - In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Sauté over medium heat until caramelized, about 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of salt to help draw out the moisture.

                - Once the onions are nicely browned, sprinkle the flour over them and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

                  - Gradually whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce. Add the dried thyme and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5 minutes until the gravy thickens. Adjust seasoning with salt if needed. If desired, stir in butter for richness.

                    Combine and Serve:

                      - Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over them. Let them simmer together for about 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors.

                        - Serve hot with your choice of sides, such as mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
