Ingredients

For the Dough:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large egg

1/4 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Filling:

1 cup finely chopped walnuts

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons melted butter

2 tablespoons honey (optional)

For Topping:

Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Mix well until combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Prepare the Filling: In a bowl, mix the finely chopped walnuts, sugar, ground cinnamon, melted butter, and honey (if using) until well combined. Set aside.

Roll Out the Dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). On a lightly floured surface, divide the chilled dough into four equal parts. Roll out one part at a time into a rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick.

Add the Filling: Spread a quarter of the walnut filling evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

Roll and Cut: Carefully roll the dough up from the longer side, ensuring the filling is tucked inside. Pinch the seams to seal. Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling.

Slice and Arrange: Once all rolls are made, use a sharp knife to slice each log into 1-inch thick pieces. Place the slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cut-side up.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Dust with Sugar: Once completely cooled, dust the nut roll cookies with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve these delicious Italian Nut Roll Cookies with your favorite coffee or tea!
