Ingredients

1 tablespoon culinary-grade matcha powder

1 cup hot water (not boiling)

1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, like almond or oat milk)

1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)

A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg (for topping)

Instructions

Sift the Matcha: In a small bowl, sift the matcha powder to remove any clumps, ensuring a smooth mixture.

Mix with Water: Slowly pour the hot water over the sifted matcha. Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small whisk, mix the matcha until it is free of lumps and forms a frothy layer on top. This should take about 1-2 minutes.

Warm the Milk: In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until hot but not boiling. If you have a milk frother, you can froth the milk to add a creamy texture. If you don't, whisk it vigorously in the pan until foamy.

Combine the Layers: In your serving cup, pour the frothed matcha first, then gently add the warm milk, allowing it to float on top. You can achieve a layered effect by pouring the milk slowly over the back of a spoon.

Sweeten to Taste: If desired, stir in honey or maple syrup to taste, ensuring it mixes well with the matcha and milk.

Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg on top for an aromatic finishing touch and serve immediately.
