Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage (or a mix)

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 large egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Cook the Meat: Add the ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

Mix the Ingredients: Stir in the marinara sauce, dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

Combine the Cheeses: In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and pepper until well combined. Stir in 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese.

Layer the Dish: In a large baking dish, layer half of the ziti, followed by the meat sauce, and then the ricotta mixture. Add the remaining ziti on top.

Top with Cheese: Finish by sprinkling the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top. Cover with aluminum foil.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Let it Cool: Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
