Ingredients

4 slices whole wheat bread

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup pepperoni slices or diced bell peppers (for vegetarian)

1/2 cup marinara sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prep the Ingredients: Start by gathering your ingredients. If you’re using bell peppers instead of pepperoni, dice them into small pieces. Set aside.

Prepare the Bread: Take two slices of whole wheat bread and spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on one side of each slice. This will add a nice flavor and prevent the bread from getting soggy.

Add Cheese and Fillings: On the non-sauce side of each of the two bread slices, layer half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning and garlic powder over the cheese. Then, top with either pepperoni slices or diced bell peppers.

Top it Off: Add the remaining mozzarella cheese on top of the filling and close each sandwich with the remaining sauce-spread slices of bread, sauce side down.

Heat the Pan: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. You want it hot enough to create a nice golden crust but not so hot that it burns the bread.

Grill the Sandwiches: Place the sandwiches in the hot skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until golden brown and crispy. Carefully flip the sandwiches and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes, pressing down slightly to help the cheese melt.

Check the Cheese: Once both sides are golden and the cheese is melted, remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute.

Slice and Serve: Cut the sandwiches in half diagonally. Serve with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
