Ingredients
  

2 slices of sourdough or whole grain bread

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup marinara sauce (plus more for dipping)

1/4 cup sliced pepperoni (or any preferred toppings like mushrooms, olives, etc.)

1 tablespoon olive oil or butter

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: crushed red pepper flakes for added spice

Instructions
 

Heat a skillet over medium heat. While it heats, assemble your sandwich.

    Spread marinara sauce on one side of each piece of bread.

      On one slice, layer half of the mozzarella cheese, then add the pepperoni slices, followed by the remaining mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes if using.

        Top the sandwich with the second slice of bread, marinara side down, to create a classic sandwich.

          Brush the outer sides of the bread with olive oil or butter to help achieve a golden brown crust.

            Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side or until it's golden and crispy.

              Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes, pressing down slightly with a spatula to ensure even melting of the cheese.

                Once both sides are crispy and the cheese has melted, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Let it sit for a minute before slicing in half.

                  Serve hot with extra marinara sauce for dipping.
