1 can (28 oz) whole peeled tomatoes

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions
 

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes translucent.

    Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes, being careful not to let it burn.

      Pour in the can of whole peeled tomatoes, including the juice. Use a wooden spoon to break up the tomatoes into smaller pieces.

        Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, and if using, the red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

          Bring the mixture to a simmer, then lower the heat and let it gently simmer uncovered for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. This helps to thicken the sauce.

            After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat. For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce slightly, or leave it chunky according to your preference.

              Stir in the fresh basil just before serving for added freshness.

                Allow the sauce to cool before using it on your pizza or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
