Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak:

1 lb ground beef

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

1/4 cup milk

1 large egg

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

2 cups beef broth

1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon soy sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Salisbury Steaks: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form the Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties about 1-inch thick.

Cook the Patties: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they’re browned and cooked through. Once done, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and sliced mushrooms (if using). Sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the sautéed vegetables, stirring for 1-2 minutes to cook the flour slightly.

Add the Liquid: Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, and pepper, stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and allow it to thicken, which should take about 3-5 minutes.

Combine: Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Simmer on low heat for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks, generously ladle the mushroom gravy over each patty, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
