Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup warm water (110°F)

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 egg (for egg wash)

1 cup cooked breakfast sausage, crumbled

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

½ cup cream cheese, softened

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon onion powder

1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped (optional)

Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, brown sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until frothy.

Mix Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.

Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare Filling: In a separate bowl, mix crumbled sausage, shredded cheddar cheese, cream cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and chives until well combined. Set aside.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Form Rolls: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a disk and place about 2 tablespoons of the filling in the center. Carefully fold the dough over the filling and pinch to seal.

Boil Rolls: Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil and stir in baking soda. Carefully drop each stuffed roll into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, turning halfway through. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.

Egg Wash: Beat the egg and brush it over each roll. Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm for breakfast or brunch!
