Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

¾ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon milk (or almond milk for a twist)

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Optional: ½ cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and milk until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix; you want a soft dough with some fluff.

Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each.

Flatten each ball slightly with the back of a fork or your fingers for a classic tea cake shape.

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but the centers remain soft.

Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving for an elegant touch.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 24 cookies

                        - Presentation Tips: Arrange the tea cakes on a vintage-style platter, and serve them alongside a pot of freshly brewed tea for a delightful afternoon treat. You can also add a sprig of mint or edible flowers for an extra pop of color.
