Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce

1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste

1 tablespoon sugar

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, boil salted water and cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add the diced onion and cook until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Add Ground Meat: Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet and break it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Combine Ingredients: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Prepare the Ricotta Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt until smooth.

Mix Everything Together: In a large bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the meat sauce, mixing well. Fold in the ricotta mixture gently to incorporate.

Layer the Ziti: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture. Top with half of the mozzarella and half of the Parmesan cheese. Layer the remaining ziti on top, followed by the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
