Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese

Butter (for spreading on bread)

For the Secret Sauce:

¼ cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 tablespoon mustard

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon pickle relish

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pickle relish, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.

Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sliced onions. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they caramelize and are golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Form the Patties: In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide the beef into two equal portions and shape them into burger patties.

Sear the Patties: Using the same skillet over medium-high heat, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, spread a generous amount of the secret sauce. Place the melted patties on the sauce, top with caramelized onions, and add another slice of Swiss cheese. Place the other slices of rye bread on top, buttered side out.

Grill the Sandwiches: Heat the skillet over medium heat and place the assembled sandwiches in the pan. Cook until golden brown on one side, about 3-4 minutes, then flip and grill the other side until golden brown and the cheese is melted, about another 3-4 minutes.

Serve: Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping.
